Psychocandy, Head on the Door, Hounds of Love, Steve McQueen, Low Life, Meat Is Murder, Os Homens Não Se Querem Bonitos, Suzanne Vega, A Secret Wish, Our Favourite Shop, O cerco... Quem me dera que todos anos da música pop/rock tivessem sido tão maus como 1985. Há pelo menos 9 anos que, infelizmente, não temos um ano tão mau como 1985.

A teoria do pior ano da pop moderna é britânica. Acho que para eles, e mais do que falar de um ou outro disco, se tratou de uma conjugação da vítória do yuppieismo e do fim da agitação e do sonho subversivo do pós-punk, e do hiato em movimentos de pop-cultura juvenis agitadores e criativos; algo que seria atenuado dois anos depois com o acid house + tecno + raves.

Mais quatro dias e cumpriam-se dois anos exactos desde que aqui despejei o meu último best of discográfico. Um pouco de contexto, para quem não acompanhou a novela: desde 1982 que faço listas com os - meus - melhores discos do ano. O que aqui vou reproduzindo reflecte o que tem de reflectir, isto é, o que gostava, e quanto gostava, em tempo real. As listas de 92 estão aqui . As dos anos anteriores não andam longe. As de 1993, abaixo reproduzidas, soam surpreendentemente certas. Hoje, quase não mexeria nos 20 discos estrangeiros (só talvez os Dinosaur Jr. e os Pearl Jam marchariam dali para fora), e quase todos permanecem, pelo menos em teoria e de memória, audíveis. Foi um ano forte, de boas convulsões estéticas. O meu alinhamento "ideológico" pró-Melody Maker estava no auge, e lá por Novembro havia encontrado e começado a ler uma revista chamada The Wire. Já a lista nacional, a 18 anos de distância, é para lá de pobrezinha. Dois deles continuam recomendáveis (os nos. 3 e 4),

Perde-se muito tempo com e discute-se demasiado sobre uma coisa que não tem (não devia ter) puto de interesse. Eis como Keith Richards despacha a religião na autobiografia Life : "There's nobody in my family that ever had anything to do with organized religion. None of them. I had a grandfather who was a red-blooded socialist, as was my grandmother. And the church, organized religion, was something to be avoided. Nobody minded what Christ said, nobody said there wasn't a God or anything like that, but stay away from organizations. Priests would be considered with much suspicion. See a bloke in a black frock, cross the road. Mind out for the Catholics, they're even dodgier. They had no time for it. Thank God, otherwise Sundays would have been even more boring than they were. Toda a verdade sobre o primeiro hype idiota do ano (correcção: segundo, logo após James Blake, e imediatamente antes - receio meu - do Tyler não sei quê e daquilo do Odd Future), nas palavras de Simon Price: It's the sort of showy shtick you'd expect from someone busking at Covent Garden, fighting with the silver-painted statue mimes for tourists' spare change. Instead, she's somehow been hand-picked by Interpol, Arctic Monkeys and Nick Cave as a support act, received the patronage of Gucci, Vogue and Lagerfeld (those cheekbones probably helped), and been described by none other than Brian Eno as "the biggest thing since Patti Smith". Citação tirada daqui . Mas Brian Eno tem uma certa razão: pode-se perfeitamente metê-la no mesmo saco de Patti Smith e despachar ambas para o esquecimento. E não há como negar que ela e os nomes que a têm escolhido para concerto de abertura foram feitos uns para os outros.
